Star Light, Star Bright

Star Light, Star Bright

Star Light, Star Bright mapped the star constellations visible above Oxford in the months of January and February. With each star represented as individual, step-activated lights, people were invited to work together to turn on whole constellations in locations across the city.

Winner of the Smart Oxford Playable City Award 2017, this city-wide intervention brought life to dark winter streets, connecting strangers for a shared moment of discovery and wonder.

In five locations across the city, Star Light, Star Bright was a city-wide experience of 47 hours of play with 56,000 sensors triggered and 83,400 lights turned on.

Star Light, Star Bright was spread out across diverse sites in Oxford, both in and outside of the tourist and university areas. Encouraging citizens to come together and map star constellations from the night sky above Oxford, this is a project designed to reach the edges of a city and all its’ demographics. With an intuitive and accessible entry point (stand on a light: it turns on) Star Light, Star Bright creates an immediate opportunity for serendipity, collaboration and spontaneity: each constellation needs more than one person to activate it to create the ultimate beam of light.

Star Light, Star Bright was designed to be democratic and citywide, demonstrating a shared city. A rapidly shareable activity that fits our visual world, easily captured for social media. Continued curiosity was encouraged, to look how the stars shine for you.
